Kutaisi is the legislative capital of Georgia, and its second largest city. Situated 221 kilometres (137 miles) west of Tbilisi, it is the capital of the western region of Imereti. Elegant, tree lined streets with 19th century houses stretching down to the banks of the Rioni River, along with several attractive parks, make Kutaisi a very beautiful place to stroll around and take in the many sights. Georgia’s parliament was transferred from Tbilisi to brand-new quarters here in 2012, and Kutaisi’s airport has become a destination for international budget airlines. The city lies at an elevation of 125–300 metres (410–984 feet) above sea level. Kutaisi is surrounded by deciduous forests to the northeast and the northwest. The low-lying outskirts of the city have a largely agricultural landscape. There are several interesting natural, historical and architectural attractions: Prometheus Caves, Motsameta Monastery, Bagrati Cathedral, Gelati Monastery and etc. The magnificent churches of Bagrati and Gelati – both UNESCO world heritages sites – testify to the importance of the region.
